Crystal aOS - AI-Powered Legal Compliance Platform
AI legal compliance platform with RAG search, a visual workflow builder, and human-in-the-loop oversight, where I built the frontend, backend, billing, and orchestration layer as the longest-tenured engineer.
Outcome
Longest-tenured engineer through the company's SOC 2 and Techstars milestones
I joined Crystal aOS as one of two engineers and became the technical continuity as CTOs and contract engineers rotated through. During my tenure the company achieved SOC 2 Type 1 and ISO 27001, was accepted into Techstars, and secured private equity funding.
Overview
Crypto law firms have to interpret rapidly changing regulations across multiple jurisdictions, and the existing tooling either treats them like generic compliance teams or asks them to bring their own AI. I joined Crystal aOS in September 2024 as one of two engineers. The other engineer was responsible for the RAG pipeline, and I built everything else, including the frontend, backend, admin area, the document ingestion tooling the intern team used, the chat view and its orchestration layer, business accounts with member management, Stripe billing, and PII stripping. We delivered the MVP in about two months, and from then on I was the longest-tenured engineer and the technical continuity as the CEO raised money and contract engineers and more than one CTO rotated through. I reviewed their code, found serious issues, and fixed them myself. During my tenure the company achieved SOC 2 Type 1 and ISO 27001, was accepted into Techstars, and secured private equity funding. The platform pairs RAG search across a curated legal document library with a visual workflow builder, so legal teams can codify reusable assessments like AUSTRAC compliance reviews or token listing evaluations and run them with human-in-the-loop oversight.
What it does
- Legal teams query a curated regulatory document library through a RAG-powered search interface and receive sourced answers whose citations are verified programmatically against the source documents rather than trusted from the model.
- A visual workflow builder lets non-engineers compose reusable compliance assessments like AUSTRAC reviews or token listing evaluations, with branching logic and human approval steps.
- Law firms manage client accounts, team membership, and per-matter permissions from a dedicated administrative area that I built.
- I built the document ingestion tooling that the intern team used to load and curate the regulatory library.
- Custom AI workflow automation runs with human-in-the-loop checkpoints, so legal teams control which steps require sign-off.
- Non-technical administrators can configure the platform end to end without engineering involvement, including user provisioning, content management, and workflow templates.
